CHAPTER TEN

Juniper woke up with the promise of a headache—not quite the full-on thing, but the storm clouds were gathering in the horizon of her skull.

“Mama?”

At Owen’s quiet summons, Juniper rolled over. As soon as she and Ash had… finished last night, there had been a noise from Owen’s room. Like a shot, Juniper had shoved herself into her dress, shame flooding her cheeks. Lord, if he’d heard what had been going on the living room…

But Owen was asleep when she went to check on him, snoring away with an open mouth, his dark lashes fanned out over his cheeks. He always looked so young when he slept, so much closer to the baby he’d once been.

Juniper had swallowed down a lump and pushed his hair back from his forehead, his skin sticky with sleep. Such a wonderful, precious kid. Even with everything else going on her life, she was so lucky to be this kid’s mom.

After kissing his hair, Juniper went into the bathroom to wash the remains of the night off in the shower and tried not to think of what she and Ash had just done. The wickedly amazing things Ash had specifically done with his mouth and that trick with her leg over his shoulder…

Juniper wasn’t successful at not thinking about it. With dressing up and the wedding and having a nightcap with Ash… She’d become a person she hadn’t been in a long, long time. Someone beyond Owen’s mother, someone who was desired by someone and desired them in return.

So she’d kissed Ash and more, because it had been so, so long since she’d felt like something more. As much as she’d enjoyed it though, she regretted it in equal measure. She couldn’t stop turning over her shame in her mind, testing the sharp edges of it as she prepared for bed. But when she climbed in with Owen, needing to hold her little guy after not seeing him all night, she fell right asleep.

Now the morning had come and she’d have to face Ash again. Hellfire and crap and every other foul word she didn’t let herself say anymore so that Owen didn’t pick it up.

“Yes?” she answered her son.

“Where were you last night?” He ran a hand over her cheek and tangled it into her hair, rubbing the strands between his fingers.

“At the wedding. Remember, I told you where we were going.”

“Why did Ash go?”

“Because they’re his friends too. Did you have fun with Grandma?”

“Yeah. But I missed you too.” His put his arms around her neck. “I don’t want you to leave again.”

“There’s no chance of that,” she said dryly to herself. “Let’s get up,” she told him more loudly. “I smell breakfast.”

As Owen dashed out of the room in his jammies, Juniper took a minute to glance in the mirror. Her face was bare and her hair… Quickly she combed it with her fingers and twisted it up in a knot. Her pajamas were an old T-shirt and some yoga pants, both of them sagging from too much wear, the elastic breathing its last.
